this is not usually a category when i mull over the year in music, but my immersion in dj culture made me realize how important the mixtape is to the electro and hip hop scenes.
and 2008 would not have been what is was without these two kick ass mixes, one for the first half of the year, and the other for the last.......
spring/summer 08 mixtape winner........MEGASOID with their Tank Thong Mixtape. one half wolf parade, one half sixtoo, all crunchy synth crunk goodness...... countless nights danced to this shit. and when all the DJs dance to something. you should too. (ps, i'm not sure if you can still find it online, so if you need a copy i can burn you one)
summer/fall 08 mixtape winner......Diplo/Santogold with their Top Ranking Mixtape. what can i say other than this was the mix to drive to the hidden beach with good friends and cold beer. it was stuck in my head just as much as megasoid was earlier in the year.
for all purposes, this year's best mixtape was a tie. please listen to both the next time you throw a party and pretend i'm the dj.
